This weekend, a fter an unsuccessful attempt to obtain a title for my ‘82 XR200R, I decided it was time to sell off some of the toys/things that I hardly use, and invest that money into something I actually can use. I’m still debating between a bike and a quad, but I’m heavily leaning towards a bike.
This all really started coming about after I went out trail riding in the Black Hills of SD, where both the XR, and the 200x are fantastic machines, but are limited to where they can go due to not being plated. Besides that minor nuisance , everyone I ride with has plated quads and I felt bad being the guy we had to worry about and plan around simply because I didn’t have a plate.
The p rimary use would be for trails, fire roads, and local gravel roads, but I’d also like to do some frozen river riding/lake riding/possibly ice racing, so it’s gotta make some good power, but still be light weight .
It won’t be a daily or a freeway bike, but it would be fun to take it to work or into town occasionally which requires 10-20 miles of 55-65 mph roads , so it would be nice if it could comfortably manage that.
Selling my stuff should hopefully net me around $ 2k -$ 2500, so that’s my budget.
I’m leanings towards a 450 motocross style bike, but could maybe be talked into a 250 if enough people think it would have enough power. I was really hoping for a YZ450F, but after some research it sounds like those take some modifications to make decent trail bikes, so I’m open to other suggestions. Any standouts? Anything to avoid? I’m open to suggestions.

Dang. jealous. Here in Oregon there isn’t a way to plate off road machines. If I had those laws, I’d have a plated CR500 by now :p
That said... go 2 stroke (if you’re not afraid of a little extra maintenance)

Only kinda joking.

DRZ400s? KLX250? CRF250L?

Plated quads? Is that a SD thing? I’ve seen it in Germany, and have always been jealous.

Yeah, 4 wheelers and dirt bikes are easily plated here, only need headlights, tail/brake lights, and a horn.
Considered/considering a 2 stroke , but coming off of two old machines that I spend more time fixing than riding, I want something that just works.

That would technically meet most of my requirements , not exactly what I’m looking for though lol.

Looking into those, DRZ’s seem to be a little tough to find around here, but the others seem to be easier to find. The 250L is a little too street oriented, but I’ve been looking at the YZ250F’s and CRF250R’s, and a 250 might actually be enough for what I want to do.

Yeah we can plate quads/dirtbikes/and side by sides here, just need headlights, tail/brake lights, horn, and a mirror. I actually rode a four wheeler for several years during the winter in college, it was a blast.

Ducati Multistrada . That is all

Way too heavy, too expensive, and no dealers near me.
Maybe I should rephrase my question, what dirt bike is also semi-decent on the street?

If you want a bike that is going to be plated, highly recommend a Honda CRF, Yamaha WR, or KTM XC. They will already have majority of the electronics installed (head light, tail light, maybe a brake light) and you can get a cheap DOT kit for them to finish it being street legal. If you went with the YZ or other motocross bike, chances are you’ll spend a lot more time and money than desired making it street legal (stator rewinding is not cheap, nor is upgrading everything else needed). KTM is by far the lightest, but also most expensive, Yamaha depending on what year you get, can get a decent fuel injected model, and Honda (what I am particular to), is a beast, lots of low end grunt, but it’s a heavy pig at about 270 lbs.

That’s pretty cool. I’d really want a q uad as like a commuter rig, I’d do that if we could here. Alas, not in WA.

CRF 250 R all y. Cheap, Honda reliability, just enough power to do stupid things.

Yeah I’ve noticed light kits aren’t super cheap, but I can maybe budget for that. Seems like the motocross bikes are much easier to find, and a lot cheaper (light kits make up for some of that). The enduro style bikes also seem a bit too street oriented for what I want. I’m looking less for a street bike that can handle some dirt, and more dirt bike that can handle a little street. The CRF250X seems about perfect, if I can manage to find one near me.
As for making it street legal it’s pretty easy in SD, headlight, tail/brake light, horn and mirror, no blinkers needed. The stator winding would be about as expensive as it got the rest I have laying around from various projects.

It is pretty fun.

I like it, but it’s a little new, out of budget, and more street oriented than I want.

Ok, there are some pretty cheap ones, still not quite what I want though.

My CRF450X was originally setup for desert racing in Nevada. Did my desert race, and kept it pretty much the same other than changing the sprocket sizes for Michigan riding. Have a supermoto kit for it, have done multi-day trips camping with it, hauling all of my gear with me on the bike. It’s overall a great bike. I went with Baja Designs kit for lighting since I would need it for the desert. If you don’t need the high output lights, Tusk makes a cheap street legal kit for under $150 IIRC

Ahhhh... I’m out of good ideas, so I’ll offer this : I owned a Honda XR400R for like 20 years. It had plen ty of power for running down dirt country roads, and enough torque that I could basically do everything on-trail in 3rd gear. It was rad and the only thing I ever did to it was oil changes and one new back tire .
Oh man now I’m gonna waste the afternoon trawling CL for a beat-up dual sport...

If I can find one an XR400R would be a good bike, again , if I can find one.

The CRF is quickly making it’s way up the list the more research I do.

For me, I fell in love with desert racing after watching Dust to Glory. Then I found out Johnny Campbell, who’s one of the stars of the documentary, is “Mr Honda”, winning 11 Baja 1000's on a Honda dirt bike, originally the XR650R then the CRF450X. For a bike that can prove it’s reliability over and over again like that, that’s what convinced me to buy a Honda 450X
